History TMS History

Over its 29 year historyTech Music School (TMS) has established itself as a market leader in popular music education and training, focusing on the achievement of technical excellence across a wide range of popular music styles supported by the development of applied music skills such as reading, composition and arranging, and music technology.

The School has excellent industry links, including record companies, artist management companies, artists, magazines and venues and has established educational links with a large number of schools and colleges throughout the UK and in a number of other countries including Italy, Sweden, Finland, Norway and the Channel Islands.

TMS was established by drummer Francis Seriau in Acton, West London in 1983 initially as a drum school offering private lessons, clinics and master classes. By 1987 the School had expanded to include guitar and bass students and in 1991 took its first intake of 14 students on a one-year Diploma in Performance.  In 1995 the School began its long association with the University of West London offering a two-year Diploma in Popular Music Performance (drums, guitar and bass).

To coincide with a move to larger premises at The Powerhouse (74 Stanley Gardens, Acton), the School expanded to include vocal students. The continued growth in student numbers saw the further expansion of the School’s buildings between 2000 and 2009 with the acquisition of 4 additional buildings in the Stanley Gardens area.

In 1999 the School began to deliver a three-year BMus in Popular Music Performance in partnership with the University of West London.  The validation of the School’s BMus was moved to Bath Spa University from September 2011.

The School achieved accreditation from the British Accreditation Council in 2009.

Recognising the need to enhance the academic leadership of its courses, the School’s first Principal was appointed in June 2010. Shortly afterwards, Francis Seriau sold Tech Music School and it became part of the BIMM Group of specialist commercial music colleges, which now has centres in London, Brighton, Bristol and Dublin.

TMS is currently expanding its curriculum offer to include degree programmes in Music Production, Songwriting and Music Business.
